THE GREAT CRATE ESCAPE

Austin shows up for its animals!

When Austin Animal Services reached critical overcrowding, the community didn’t wait—it mobilized.

In just one weekend, volunteers, fosters, adopters, and rescue partners came together for the Great Crate Escape, a rapid-response effort to move dogs out of the shelter and into safe, supportive environments.

The result: 137 dogs left the shelter in a matter of days.

These dogs were adopted, placed into foster homes, or transferred to rescue organizations, creating immediate, life-saving capacity and giving each animal a second chance.

It was really thanks to the Austin Animal Welfare Coalition who jumped in and did some amazing promoting and provided support volunteers. I just did adoptions all weekend.

A Community-Led Effort

This success was powered by people across Austin stepping up in real time—and by strong collaboration between the community and shelter leadership.

Volunteers supported operations on the ground, from walking dogs and assisting adopters to coordinating transitions. Fosters opened their homes. Rescue partners expanded capacity. Adopters made life-changing decisions.

Together, this effort demonstrated what’s possible when a community aligns around a shared goal: saving lives, together.

Recognized Across Austin

The urgency of the situation and the strength of the response was reflected across local media:

This coverage reinforces both the scale of the challenge and the impact of immediate, coordinated action.

Moments like this show what’s possible when people act quickly, but long-term progress will require ongoing support, expanded foster networks, strong rescue partnerships, and continued investment in programs that keep animals out of the shelter system in the first place.
